I met Roger when he joined the FRL board. He was instrumental in the startup of the Children’s Art Calendar 3 years ago. It has been a successful fund raiser, yes, but more than that it was a celebration of the young artists of the Redwoods. He was smart, funny, and a hard worker. It was a privilege and an honor to work with him. He will be sorely missed.
As noted in his obituary:
He was known as a light-hearted, gregarious person who genuinely loved people and was a keen observer of character. He had a special ability to lift ones’ spirits and was dearly loved.

I knew Robert from the Serendipity Book Store. I was a little bit amazed at the enthusiasm he brought to the job. He hardly ever gave up his slot, and he often volunteered to sub for other book store docents. Many book store patrons would ask me ‘What day is Andy on?’, ‘How is Andy?’, ‘My kids love Andy’. He will be sorely missed.
As noted in his obituary:
Those who knew him felt the warmth of his friendship, those who loved him he will be forever missed. He was delighted to making people happy, always eager to lend a helping hand for others. May his love always be in our hearts, thoughts and actions toward others.

The FRL Board has selected Frances Rapin to receive this year’s Community Service Award. A check in the amount of $2,000 will be presented to the Library in her name, to be used as she specifies.
Over the years Frances has been an innovator and an advocate for the Friends and for the Library. Under her leadership we conducted our Hi-$5 Campaign, which raised $45,000 to restore hours that budget cuts had eliminated from the Library’s schedule. We opened our Serendipity Book Store in October 1999, a project that originated with Frances and one that she worked tirelessly to bring about. Anyone who was involved knows very well that it would not have happened without Frances’ direction and hard work.
THE NEWS IS OUT: The Guest Speaker for our upcoming Annual Meeting will be Katherine Longshore, author of GILT, a story of friendship and betrayal set in the court of Henry VIII; and TARNISH, the story of young Anne Boleyn.
Katherine grew up in Arcata. Attending HSU, she created her own major in Cross-cultural Studies and Communications, planning to travel and write. Forever. Four years, six continents and countless pairs of shoes later, she went to England for two weeks, stayed five years and discovered history. She now lives in another part of California with her husband and two children. She’s still writing.
